Established plants in good condition generally do well on annual feeding. Young plantings, recently transplanted material, and anything recovering from stress benefit from more frequent applications while they establish. Soil conditions factor in, too, since our clay holds some nutrients tightly and lets others leach right through.

Pale or undersized leaves, short annual growth on branch tips, thin canopies, and poor flowering all suggest a nutrient shortage. Some shrubs tell you specifically; azaleas and hollies turn yellow between the veins when iron isn’t available, which usually traces back to soil pH rather than a lack of fertilizer.

Slow-release blends are applied so the material reaches the root zone rather than sitting on mulch. Rates get adjusted by plant type and age, since a mature oak and a young azalea have very different needs. Where pH is limiting uptake, correcting that comes first; tree & shrub fertilization can’t fix a chemistry problem.

It helps, as support rather than a cure. A well-fed plant has the reserves to push new growth and wall off damage, which is exactly what recovery requires. What feeding won’t do is stop an active insect or disease problem, and pushing heavy nitrogen into a struggling plant can make things worse. Diagnosis comes first.
